The FA have announced that the WSL and Women’s Championship will undergo a rebrand, with the leagues’ names and logos changing ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The WSL’s full name had previously been the Barclays FA Women’s Super League, while the Championship had been known as the FA Women’s Championship.

In addition to renewing their sponsorship of the WSL, Barclays have now become the new title partner for the Championship, while ‘The FA’ has also been dropped from the title of both leagues.

From the 2022/23 season, the WSL will be known as the Barclays Women’s Super League (BWSL), and the Championship will become the Barclays Women’s Championship (BWC).

This represents the continued long term strategy for the leagues to be under new ownership in the future, with this process ongoing. 

The logos of both divisions have also been altered to reflect this change.

“We’ve seen tremendous strides made in the women’s professional game since it turned professional four years ago, which meant we needed a refreshed branding that reflected that progress,” said Kelly Simmons, the FA’s director of the women’s professional game.

The 2021/22 campaign was a watershed one for women’s football in England thanks to the landmark broadcast deal with Sky Sports and the BBC, which came into effect at the beginning of the season.

It marked the first time that the WSL TV rights had been sold separately from the men’s game, with clubs seeing a proportion of the revenue. As a result, the WSL enjoyed a substantial increase in exposure, with viewing hours increasing from 8.83m in 2020/21 season to 34.048m in 2021/22.

On the rebranding, the FA said: “The refreshed look and identity has been created to reflect this increased interest in the women’s professional game, with the new brand aiming to present a more polished and premium look that stands out amongst the competition and better aligns the two leagues.”
