TRIBUNNEWS.COM, Jakarta – The Indonesian government is committed to contributing to maintaining climate resilience through carbon emission reduction. This is in accordance with what was conveyed by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, who explained that the government already had a road map to achieve various targets related to handling the climate crisis. “Indonesia has adopted a long-term strategy of low carbon and climate resilience by 2050 as well as a detailed road map to achieve its net zero emission target by 2060 or earlier,” Jokowi said in remarks at the Climate Change Summit in Glasglow last year.

In line with the Government’s vision, PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk or BRI also take part in supporting climate resilience through the absorption of carbon emissions, one of which is through the “BRI Planting” program. Through this program, BRI will distribute 1.75 million tree seedlings until 2023. It is estimated that the emission absorption will reach 108,065 tCo2e in the 5th year.

This figure is based on projected calculations and assumptions on the average CO2 absorption capacity of productive trees distributed and planted in the program BRI Plants. The projected carbon sequestration has also taken into account the potential mortality from tree seedlings distributed.

In addition to absorbing carbon emissions, BRI Plants also be one of the efforts BRI in increasing empowerment to the community, especially MSME actors to jointly strengthen the implementation of Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG).

BRI Planting is an initiative BRI by providing productive tree seeds or fruit trees to customers who disburse loans. BRI gradually distribute productive tree crops which are expected to have a positive impact on economic, social and environmental aspects.

President Director BRI Sunarso revealed that his efforts through BRI Plants can increase community productivity. On the other hand, BRI continue to provide assistance to ensure that the use of seeds can run optimally and the community can feel the benefits.

“As soon as a customer disburses the people’s business credit (KUR), we provide seeds and the customer is obliged to plant and take care of it. This initiative has been carried out and hundreds of thousands of seeds have been distributed to the community,” explained Sunarso.

BRI Planting targets as many as 750 thousand seeds to be planted in 2022 and around 1 million more seeds to be planted in 2023. By the end of September 2022, BRI Plants has succeeded in distributing and planting 376 thousand tree seedlings.

For the 2022 target, out of 754 thousand, around 376 thousand seeds were distributed for village land, 227 thousand seeds for existing customers from the People’s Business Credit (KUR) BRI Units, and 151 thousand seeds for new customers from KUR BRI Units until the end of September 2022.

This tree seed distribution is run by 799 BRI units, 236 Branch Offices, and 17 Regional Offices BRI in various regions in Indonesia. The types of plant seeds provided are productive tree species, so that in addition to being able to absorb carbon, they can also provide added value for the community to be utilized as a result.

The types of tree seeds that have been distributed include Durian (33.64 percent), Mango (22.45%), Avocado (21.80%), Guava (5.79%), Orange (2.39%), and other types of tree seedlings. other trees (14.65%).

“For example, I plant 15 avocado trees and 10 mango trees in my yard, my hope is that in two years these trees will be shaded and absorb a lot of carbon dioxide and the fruit can also be used by the community,” he said giving an example.

Initiative BRI Plants This also supports the company in implementing the 3P concept or Pro People, Pro Planet, and Pro Profit. In the Pro People concept, BRI encourage various programs to improve the welfare of the community. This is shown in BRI Plants where the management of productive crops is expected to provide economic value for the community.

The Pro Profit carried by the company is not limited to direct profits received BRI. More than that, BRI continue to encourage customers, especially among MSMEs to increase their business capacity and succeed in “grading up”. The continued escalation of credit distribution is a clear evidence of support for the development of MSMEs.

In a sustainable manner, the provision and empowerment of productive plants is expected to be a contribution BRI in reducing emissions and in accordance with the ProPlanet concept. He is optimistic that he will be able to distribute these productive plants in both rural and urban areas.
